A Temptation Too Far
We all, as employers of domestic/household staff hope and expect them to be trustworthy, and we are rewarded by an excellent working relationship. But as a recent case has shown, valuables can sometimes be a temptation too far.
In a recent court case, a member of the Queen’s staff stole medals, signed photographs of the royal family and other items worth up to £100,000 and sold them on eBay.
The thefts occurred when Adam Canto, 37, was on corona virus cleaning duties at Buckingham Palace. He stole insignia of the Companion of the Order of the Bath and Commander of the Royal Victorian Order
At Westminster magistrates’ court recently Canto admitted stealing items including signed photos of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and a photo album of the banquet during President Trump’s state visit, which he sold for £1,500.
Canto had previously been employed as a catering assistant and had worked at the palace for five years. During the lockdown he was given additional cleaning duties which was when he stole the items.
Sentencing was deferred by the magistrates at the hearing.
