Employees Take A Wait-And-See Approach To New Job Moves
While the number of job adverts in the UK is well above pre-pandemic levels, the number of those seeking work has headed in the opposite direction.
According to the Office for National Statistics, the volume of jobs advertised online was 128% higher than in February last year.
However, a separate report from the jobs site “ Indeed” has reported that only 11 % of workers on furlough were urgently seeking a new job.
Of those on furlough 41% and 56% of those not in work at that time were not searching for a new job.
The reasons given for their decision varied considerably, Of those those on furlough and not searching for work, 71 per cent gave their reasons as they anticipated returning to their pre-pandemic position.
However, 12 % said they were uncomfortable returning to in-person work due to Covid-19.
It is yet unclear what effect these factors will have of wage inflation in the Domestic and Household sector.
According to the website “Jobs”, between February and July, advertised pay grew by nearly 7% in construction, 6% in driving, 5% in manufacturing and 4% in food compared with a rise of 0.8% for all jobs, with the sectors facing the biggest shortages of candidates offering the biggest pay increases.
With the combined effects of Brexit on many job seekers returning to their home countries and Covid-19 kit would not be surprising if the domestic and household sector followed in a similar pattern but there are no figures as yet.
