Flexible Hours On Demand
Flexible Hours On Demand….I Think Not!
In a major employment development the government has announced that under new plans most employees will be able to ask if they can, for example: work flexible hours, job share and work compressed, annualised, or staggered hours, from day one of their employment instead of waiting for 26 weeks. A final date for this introduction has not yet been set.
Under the plans, employers who turn down a request for flexible hours must consider alternative options. Employees will also no longer have to fill in lengthy forms to justify their requests.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Do I have to allow employees to work flexibly?
No, but you must consider the request in a reasonable manner You can only refuse a request for one of the reasons specified in the legislation, of which the following generally apply to domestic and household staff.
These are:
- Unacceptable additional costs.
- An inability to reorganise work among existing staff.
- An inability to recruit additional staff.
- Insufficient work during the periods the employee proposes to work.
There are further reasons for companies and businesses which are not relevant to our readers in relation to domestic/household staff.
