Hidden Health Risks For Pregnant Women And Returning Mothers in Domestic Staff Jobs

A survey by the Equality and Human Rights Commission has found that 41% of pregnant workers feel that their work risked their health.

Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, employers must protect the health and safety of new and expectant mothers, while the 2010 Equality Act also provides protection from discrimination.

The TUC has claimed some employers were ignoring their legal responsibilities when it came to keeping pregnant or returning mothers well.

Now the TUC and Maternity Action have produced a guide for employers to highlight some of the workplace risks facing pregnant workers or those who have recently given birth.

These include:

Irregular and long hours

Back pain might be worsened by some activities

Hot working conditions, which  can lead to increased  risk of exhaustion

Stress

and, importantly for  women working in the domestic staff environment, chemical exposure-some solvents, epoxies, resins, pesticides, disinfectants and sterilising fluids can increase the chances of miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth and birth defects.

Employers may find the link to the guide in paragraph four useful.
