Huge Increase For Paternity Leave On The Cards
A potentially huge increase in paternity leave for fathers that could affect many employers, is on the cards. Theresa May could raise the current two weeks’ statutory allowance of £148 per week or 90% of usual pay, whichever is lower, to 12 weeks. It would be, she is reported to have said, be one of her “legacy” policies.
Such an increase was proposed last year by the Women and Equalities Committee. It’s proposal was for a “use it or lose it” allowance that would encourage more men to take longer periods of leave.
However, to date the leave has not seen any substantial take up , with only 9,200 new fathers taking the leave, a mere 1% of those eligible. As always we will keep you up-to-date with development.
