If I Employ A Person Still At School As Extra Part-time Help Do I Pay The National Minimum Wage?
We have been asked this question by an employer who already has a Housekeeper but requires extra help during the school Summer holidays.
The answer is quite simply, NO. You offer what you consider to be a fair rate ideally for the hour.
The national minimum wage does not apply to school children, irrespective of whether they are on work experience, work at weekends on a regular basis, or on an agreed temporary basis.
However, those aged 16 and 17 are entitled to a national minimum wage of £4.05 per hour, provided that they have ceased to be of compulsory school age, except 16 and 17 year old apprentices, who are entitled to the apprenticeship rate of £3.50.
