If Your Domestic Staff Ask For A Pay Rise, Here’s What You Need To Know

Unless you have an agreed wage increase policy with your domestic and or household staff, it is quite possible that they will at some stage, ask for a pay rise. One of the things you should be aware of, to enable negotiations to be tackled in an open framework, is the going rate for pay rises in the UK. You, of course, do not have to stick to this, and there are many reasons why you may wish to pay a higher, or lower figure, but it is useful to have a benchmark.

According to the Office of National Statistics, inflation in the UK economy has effectively wiped out pay growth.

The ONS says in the three months to February2017, average weekly earnings for employees rose by 2.3% including bonuses, and by 2.2% excluding bonuses, compared with a year earlier.

However, when adjusted for inflation the situation is very different with average weekly earnings increasing by 0.2% including bonuses, and by just 0.1% excluding bonuses over the year. This was the slowest rate of growth since 2014.
