Mental Health In The Spotlight

The issue of Mental Health has been in the spotlight recently with Mental Health Awareness Week running from the 13th May to 19th May. It is perhaps a time for extra thought to be given to your domestic staff, many of whom may be living in another country to  their family.

Living and working in this situation may well result in some stress and emotional problems from time to time.

The vision of the Mental Health Foundation which promoted  the Awareness Week says its vision is for a world with good mental health for all.

“Our mission is to help people understand, protect and sustain their mental health. Prevention is at the heart of what we do, because the best way to deal with a crisis is to prevent it from happening in the first place,” says the Foundation

Towards this aim, you, as an employer, can play a role in achieving this. How? Simply by taking the time every now and then to chat informally with staff, asking if they feel under pressure? Are there issues or problems they are finding difficult and stressful? Do they feel they need help?

It doesn’t take much, but could well mean a lot.

The Foundation recommends seeking the advice and support of a GP as a matter of priority if the person feels mental health pressures are mounting.

“If you are in distress and need immediate help and are unable to see a GP, you should visit your local A&E.” they say.

Alternatively, the staff  member can talk to the Samaritans. The website https://www.samaritans.org/branches/ will take you to a site where a search can be done for a nearest branch and someone to talk to.

I would like to thank you all for the care and attention you gave to ensure that our housekeeper was just right for us.

My family back home has welcomed me and I am enjoying my new life with the family you found for me.

Using The Graham Agency was a truly good decision, from first chat to welcoming the candidate you found for us was simplicity itself. Excellent matchmaking.

I have been working for this family now for just over a year, and am able to enjoy life and save.

The idea of finding a domestic staff member for the first time on our own was intimidating, so we would like to express our gratitude for taking away all the issues for us.

I would just like to say a big Thank You for finding the perfect job for me.
