Mothers Day
It’s Mothers Day on Sunday March 30th but how did this originate? It stems from the Middle Ages when it became the custom to allow those who had moved away from where they grew up, to return and visit their home – or mother church. The date was the fourth Sunday of the Christian festival of Lent.
During this period it was not unusual for children as young as 10 to leave home and work. This custom allowed a re-union of families for one day. Over time this became Mothering Sunday in the UK and as the dates of Lent vary each year, so does the date of Mothering Sunday.
It is not a Public holiday.
