New Legislation On Work Experience Payment
A bill currently going through parliament will lay down new regulations on payment for work experience. This will obviously extend to any such work undertaken regarding household, gardening or seasonal activity.
Titled the Unpaid Work Experience (Prohibition) Bill [HL] 2017-19 I will prohibit non-payment for work-experience which exceeds four continuous or non-continuous weeks.
First reading took place on 27 June. This stage is a formality that signals the start of the Bill’s journey through the Lords. Second reading – the general debate on all aspects of the Bill was scheduled for 27th October 2017.
The Bill will amend the National Minimum Wage Act 1998, and essentially states that anyone undertaking such work experience who has ceased to be of compulsory school age, but has not reached the age of 26, will be eligible to receive the National Minimum Wage at the rate specified for workers of the person’s age.
This will extend to any organisation which provides an individual with work experience.“work experience” means observing, replicating, assisting with and carrying out any task with the aim of gaining experience of a particular workplace, organisation, industry or work-related activity.
