Six things you need to do when employing staff for the first time
If you are considering taking on a domestic staff member, it may well be the first time you have ever employed anyone.
There tend to be two approaches to the situation; either, in with both feet without really considering the implications, or, feeling more than a little out of your depth and stepping in to the unknown.
We would not recommend the first approach under any circumstances, but, in the second circumstance, there is now an easy to access port of call, which spells out the essentials you should know and need to do that relieves some of the stress.
It is to be found on the UK Government website at www.gov.uk/employing-staff, entitled: “Six things you need to do when employing staff for the first time.” And it is VERY useful indeed.
There are two things we would recommend you do. Firstly, visit the website if you are about to employ someone, either for the first time or to check that you are doing everything that needs to be done. Itdoesn’t take long and could save you some grief later. Secondly, sign up for HMRC’s Business Help and Education Email service and they will update you regularly on things of which you should be aware… and it’s free!
