Summer Time Blues

It’s that time again, Summer and people are thinking about holidays.

But as an employer of Domestic/Household staff can you say NO, when a staff member asks specific holiday dates?

The answer in short, is YES, you can.

The Working Time Regulations 1998 only state that you must give workers a minimum of 5.6 weeks’ paid annual leave. They don’t say anything about when you have to give them that time off

It may well be a good idea, depending upon how many staff you have, to include a policy on annual leave in the contract of employment you provide. (You do of course have one!)  It can cover how much notice staff need to give and exclude particularly busy or difficult dates and the continuous length of time, e.g. two weeks.

As a thoughtful employer, all these aspects can be discussed as there are often exceptional circumstances to consider.

It’s worth remembering that happy staff tend to stay in your employ.
