When the Heat
When The Heat Is On
The Met Office issued it’s first ever red weather warning last year as a series of heat waves swept across the UK.
In one location, the temperature hit 40.3C, a new record. Such heatwaves are set to increase in intensity, duration and frequency because of the climate crisis.
So as an employer what do you need to know and do?
The first thing is that there is no maximum temperature in the UK for working conditions. This does not mean that conditions can be ignored and, employers do have health and safety obligations to their staff.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) advice is that the temperature in all workplaces inside buildings must be reasonable, including home working. HSE can take legal action when potentially harmful conditions exist and are ignored.
