Who Is Still Out There?
If you have experienced an unexpected slump in response to a job advertisement for domestic or household staff recently, this could be the reason:
The “perfect storm” of Brexit and the Covid-19 pandemic has kicked off a huge exodus of immigrants from the UK with London the hardest hit.
A recently published blog, published by the government funded Economic Statistics Centre of Excellence, (ESCoE) estimates from their research that as many as 1.3 million people born abroad left the UK between the third quarter of 2019 and the same period in 2020.
In London alone, they estimate 700,000 foreign-born residents packed their bags and moved out – leading to a potential 8% drop in the capital’s population.
Post-Brexit immigration rules, says the ESCoE mean that EU nationals who left the UK in the past year will need work visas to return and work in Britain. Those with settled status would be able to return to fill jobs, but new migrants would not.
