The Hidden Health Issue?
If you ask for time off to go to a doctor, what is your boss’s reaction?
Do they say to take the time out of your holiday pay? Do they say ‘yes you can take the time off’? Do they for instance, look very hard at you and wonder why you need to see a doctor? It could be that you look fit and well, try not to show any problem and just keeping going.
The first item may well be a matter of your own contract of employment.
But what about the issue of discussing things with your boss? If you are asked, “Is there any health issue you would like to discuss?” what would be your reaction?
Would you find it an intrusion, or an attempt to help?
It is a fact during this pandemic, furlough and lockdowns the number of people suffering some form of mental health issue has soared.
According to recent figures, requests for GP sick notes have climbed by a huge 178% importantly, over half – 52% involved mental health issues such as: depression, stress and anxiety. These figures illustrate the toll the pandemic is taking on us all.
So if your boss asks you “Is there a health issue you would like to discuss?” Answering “Yes” doesn’t put you in special category that you feel may affect your job. There are thousands suffering in the same way.
